Thanks for all the nice comments! Here’s the Burda 105-05-2010 jersey dress. It’s very quick to make – I sewed it up in a single evening. However when I tried it on I didn’t like the length and cut six inches off without measuring very carefully. This proved to be rather more than I intended. I think I forgot to allow for turning the hem up after I’d trimmed it. Consequently this dress isn’t going to be wearable for work.
I do like the flower, although I think it would have been better placed a bit further to the side – in the pictures I’ve pulled the top to one side to get the right effect. I don’t think it would have been possible to cut it that way with the amount of fabric I had though. I’m claiming the wonky shoulders are fashionable asymmetry.
This dress is much more in the style I like to imagine myself having than the pleated one I finished the other week. In fact it very much reminds me of some of the things Tegan Jovanka wore in Doctor Who. (Why yes, my taste does owe a lot to 1980s BBC science fiction.) I think Tegan usually wore flats though, and this style does seem to work OK with my favourite red plastic shoes:
This is a good thing as I can’t wear heels for any length of time, never mind walk in them gracefully.
Tegan had one very brightly coloured outfit that I loved. There were surprisingly few pictures of it to be found on the Internet but I do still have an old poster from Radio Times of the character wearing it:
This one is definitely on the list of things to be copied when I find the right fabric.
Next up is the dress that, at the age of about nine, I imagined I’d be wearing when (as was clearly only a matter of time) I became a Doctor Who companion. It’s not entirely sensible but probably wearable for work, at least on days when I only have to do software rather than hardware. It’s made out of the white and gold fabric I got last month. Twenty six years on and no Doctor so far, but once it’s finished I’ll be ready if he does turn up!

But I have honestly never set eyes on those two people in your photo before. Must have been the Dr Who that was around when I discovered boys existed! So, I actually had a social life and NO time to watch TV. But even so, I can’t believe I’ve never seen them at all. Sooo eighties!
Oh, and I must say, I would so definitely wear that dress to work! Except it’s too nice for that, of course! But not too short.

You know you mention about length and suitability for work. Why don’t you try one of those dresses that look like Roman blinds. Saw one in a shop the other day in westfield. You can wear it maxi then pull the cord and have it as high as you require. A multitasking dress. The one I saw it the shop was kid of military grey. You could also do that with a draw string skirt upside down grafted onto a bodice of whatever. Recycling rocks. You should have come to the Uni of Derby fashion show there were some cool dresses. Keep on sewing.
Forgot to say behind me in Drs assistant queue.I’ve been waiting the same amount of time (or there abouts as it is all relative) for a Tom Baker scarf and still not been able to knit more than three rows without it turning into macrame. I don’t like Amy so maybe we could butt her out of the next seies and be Matts two new lovely assistants. You could be the good looking one and I could be the one who has gone ten light years with a dalek. Actually I wanted to go one better when I was a kid. I wanted to be the Dr. Was hoping the regenerations would go wrong and it end up being a woman. Have to stick with weevil second from the left on Torchwood.
Have you tried to climb into your composting bin. It could be the new Tardis. Bigger on the inside. Actually it looks like a half finished Dalek. You know without the ping pong balls lol. Idea for a dress a bobbly metallic looking tribute to a Dalek. Got new colours now you know. Get a Dr Who duvet or curtain set and make a vintage look tribute to the Doc. Just don’t go for the Blake 7 look. That would be a bit too retro. Going off topic. Do you make any other clothes apart from dresses??????? Was just wondering.
I have noticed (and I think it’s due to the F word which I refuse to mention) there have been a lot of lovely African print fabrics around in the mags. The are big, loud and beautiful. i think they would make nice dresses if you had either the bodice or the skirt in a plain fabric. Don’t think many people could carry off a full colour dress. Though at the moment anything goes really. Unless you put a big wide chunky belt with it to break the silhouette.
